Boden gift vouchers- void if you return items?

I'm confused. Been shopping at Boden for 20 years.
I've had a few gift vouchers for £10 from them over the years.

The total doesn't show your voucher discount but they say it will come off your credit card payment.

However, if you return all items, then surely you have lost the voucher? They don't put another £10 on your card.

I was told last time I phoned about this that the voucher would go into your credit with them. It didn't.

It seems unfair that they give a voucher but if you return the item, that's it. Even if you want to use it within valid dates.
Surely the voucher should be valid if you return the item as you've not benefited from it.
eg the item I bought was £X amount minus 20% code, minus £10 voucher. My credit card debit shown on the site was £X-20%. It says the £10 will be deducted but won't show online.

But if the item goes back, that's it.

Am I misunderstanding?

Do an exchange and you'll get a second chance

I think legally they have to reissue the gift voucher or else put the money on your card!

If it's the vouchers they post to you, then both times I've made a return I've lost the voucher. I emailed to ask about this the last time it happened and didn't even receive a response. I think the customer service has gone downhill somewhat.

There’s a difference between gift vouchers you get as a gift and promotional money off vouchers.

Just do an exchange

I'm surprised to hear that allastern, I've always had whatever % off and voucher that was used honoured on exchange

The freebie gift vouchers are time-limited. I think if you get credit, it only lasts until the voucher would have run out.

I have just used one to buy a pair of trousers, but ordered 2 sizes in 2 strikes to make sure one of them was right!

Yes i know that.

But they still ought not to void the money off voucher if you return something and would like to re-use.

You cannot do an exchange with it.

It's hard to explain but the total amount taken off your credit card on the original order does not show the voucher. For some reason they don't! What it says is that the total amount taken for your clothes (ie using the £10 voucher) will appear on your CC statement.

If you do an exchange, there is nowhere on the invoice you receive for the original goods that shows you used a £10 voucher. On mine it shows I ordered 2 sizes of something, with 20% discount applied- but NO £10 voucher as well.

So- for argument's sake- the voucher will not be left on my CC when the refund is made for both returned items, I'm pretty sure.

I pay by Paypal on Boden (I have trouble logging in to my account, and checking out, to pay by card, another thing Boden customer services haven't proved helpful with) and so you're not allowed to exchange anything if you've used that payment method.
