Can we have a “Staple Basics Sticky” please?

Hello

I’d like to ask if the S&B community would like a “sticky” or pinned thread to list the best staples out there?

I’m talking black vests, white vests, black tees, white tees, tights, and any other “staples” a typical capsule wardrobe should hold?

This is because I’m at the end of my tether with crap vests twisting in the wash or having scratchy labels, crap T-shirts (M&S yes you) being see thru/out of shape again after one wash and also tights that actually stay up and don’t ladder with one fart.

Not only can we start to list our “surefire staples” but can @MNHQ have a think about this if the consensus is that this is a good idea??

Merci

PHSG

Excellent idea.
Similarly, a list of "go to" shops for different body shapes and heights could be good, as we have loads of threads for people who are, for example, pear shaped and looking for jeans.

Yes - jeans, bloomin’ Jeans.

Bane of my actual life.

Good idea:

The best black t-shirts I've found recently have been in Cos.

The best jeans I've found recently have been Levis, although I still like M&S Autograph skinnies too.

Tights that stay up - Monsoon or Wolford (sales only)

Ha anybody yet found the most perfect black turtle neck?

Can we do any staples? Like basic black boots, for example?

Jeans. I bite the bullet and buy diesel ones. I only have two pairs at any one time and basically live in them so I can justify it. I still buy them on sale though.

Yes! Great idea.

Whistles court shoes, I often pick up new pairs on e bay, same with Whistles clutches.

Top shopJamie jeans.

Still searching for perfect t shirts.

I bought a perfect black turtle neck in Next the other day. I only went in on a whim as it was the only shop by the station. Haven't shopped in Next for years.

I don't know what your criteria are but I love this one. The neck is exactly the right size and height, it's lovely and slim on the shoulders but gets looser on the way down so it skims my belly. The material is not too thin and not too thick. I'll see if I can find a link. It was about £15 I think.

@coatsandats that’s a very handy link. That cut at the bottom will be good for covering emerging baby bump too meaning I can hopefully avoid unwanted conversations at work for a touch longer.

See - this thread IS needed Grin

Jeans - River Island Amelie. I don't buy anything else anymore now. It took me YEARS to find decent jeans.

Thanks, Coats. It looks nice but I want wool, ideally. M&S have a thin merino one online, which I'm going to try and check out.

Tights - I'm fat and short so tights fall down all the time! I finally bit it and got some snag tights and they are amazing. I'll be replacing all my tights when I have some more money but I could only afford 3 pairs at first. They've washed really well though and not laddered yet!

@spugzbunny I was really disappointed with my snag tights Sad

I have the black M&S turtle neck! I'm not completely sure about it - it's close fitting at the neck, then less so in the body. Maybe I should have sizes down? And I'm not sure that it doesn't give me some kind of double chin 😄. It's also warmer than I hoped.

I like the Next longline vest tops. 95%cotton with a touch of Lycra and only £7 each. I'm 5 9 So they come below my bum /mid thigh but I like them long.

Tights - I second Wolford. Well worth the money. Falke are good too.
Polo neck - prob not the holy grail, but La Redoute do cashmere ones and are often at 40% off. True to size. Possibly not the softest ever cashmere but pas mal indeed for the price. Here
I quite like the look of this one too but it's a bit pricey.

Another vote for Next longline vests. Excellent for creating a good line, perfect with skinnies/jeggings and they keep their shape. Only good in dark colours though.

I also nominate Next for their jersey denim leggings. So comfortable, keep their shape and the lighter bleach wash looks like jeans.

Boots- mint velvet/jigsaw

Coat- jigsaw

Cashmere- pure Collection

Humourless- that's a shame re the M&S turtleneck.

I've got a cashmere one, but am a lady of a certain age and am increasingly finding cashmere too warm.

I think what I want is a mixture of wool and cotton - it doesn't exist.
