Dress code for the opera.

This is not something I ever thought I'd write, but I could do with some pointers. DP and I are going to Poland for Christmas and I quite fancy getting tickets for The Nutcracker while we're there. Can anyone give me some advice on the dress code? TIA.

You'll normally have a range of dress from those who may have come straight after work to those who dress up. I've never been to an opera with a dress code.

Try tripadvisor for the venue. I’ve been to opera at the local theatre in any old thing and to picnic opera in fancy clothes and DH in black tie (manky old jacket, black jeans and bow tie really). I’d want to know about the venue, get some google images etc

It sounds a lovely Christmassy thing to do and hopefully will be cold enough to warrant the full Dr Zhivago look

Well you will definitely need your tiara .
I used to go to the opera at the London Colisium and there was a real mix of dress. Some people had come straight from the office, some were day trippers and dressed for comfort and some had dressed up in smart dresses and suits. People do dress up more for a special or gala performance. If I were you I would email the opera house and ask if there is a dress code for your performance. Failing that, I think you would be safe in anything vaguely smart.

In other words words it doesn't really matter what you wear unless that particular performance or location has a dress code and you get booted out.

I have never dressed up to go to a performance anywhere in the world and just wear smart casual clothes.

Some people will go in jeans, others in very fancy outfits. Its fun to dress up, so I'd go inbetween.
Fme, people dress up a bit more on Friday and Saturday performances. Sounds lovely!

OH i would get a dress like you see ladies wearing in those period films. from times gone by. very glamorous you will be. !

You wear what you like I guess. If you are out and about beforehand or going out after, wear how you see fit.

I go to the opera a fair amount, have never been in Poland. Agree with PP that there is a range of outfits. However, I often use this as an opportunity to crack out a beautiful cocktail dress or gown that I haven't yet had a chance to wear (not a full on ballgown, just a slinky long dress). So if you want to use this as an opportunity to dress up, why not? Be prepared to have tourists asking to take photos with you though 😂
