Extreme minimalism

Since not working I have realised that I only need 4 items of clothing (coat / shoes/ underwear excepted).

1 pair mid wash jeans
1 pair black jeans
1 white v neck tee shirt
1 Black v neck tee shirt.

This has led me to ponder selling or donating the entire rest of wardrobe.

Even when working I just switched the jeans with navy / black trousers.

I think I could manage with concentrating more on accessories.

Is anyone else embracing extreme minimalism boredom ?

I've started to embrace minimalism but I think I can't do extreme minimalism.

Your list does not include house clothes?

What are house clothes? If you mean PJs no I excluded those, along with underwear. maybe not so minimal after all

Yup, like PJs, etc. I wear shorts and tank tops (or PJs if winter) so I just call them collectively house clothes. :)

I think maybe your jeans will work, but I'd add a top or two.

You are going to also need a jumper in winter (but I'm impressed that you can find a white t-shirt that you can wear by itself day-in-day-out without awkward transparency and staying bright white).

Best zebbie I can recommend the Zara white 'love life' v neck tees. I actually have 2 white ones so maybe that's cheating. They do fold up small though.

Won’t you get bored just wearing the same two or three outfits on repeat? I think lots of people work with a sort of style uniform, but four items seems bonkers to me. But even the idea of project 33 or whatever it’s called brings me out in a cold sweat!

I can't see your wardrobe working for you on really hot days, or cooler days where a tshirt isn't enough but your (one?) coat is too much.

Do you also need some dressy options?

Report
AnythingButMagnolia · 16/09/2018 00:10

Judy, no I don't get bored. I find it so simple to wear the same things. I just change necklace, or scarf or whatever if I fancy a slightly different look.

Hmm binky. When the weather was hot I alternated 2 vest maxi dresses.

You are right I would need a cardigan or jumper, but have no use for dressy stuff.

So I now reckon I need:

2 x jeans (blue & black)
2 x tees (white & black)
I x cardigan (black)
2x vest dresses (both black)

My dream wardrobe is actually similar. I just want white top, black top, and striped black/white top (they suit my colouring). But maybe more than one of each.

Do you never go to weddings/christenings etc? Some people wouldn't give a flying fuck if you turned up in your jeans and tshirt, other people would take it as a slight.
Don't you play any sport, swim etc? Go on holiday where you might need light weight clothes? I wear jeans and a tshirt most days, but I couldn't wear jeans for the whole of the summer this year it was so bloody hot. I have got my lightweight jacket out for dog walking and willl have to wear a thicker coat next month onwards, with gloves and scarf.
I get the whole minimalism thing, and it's great for the planet longer term if we all didn't buy so many clothes, but I think your list is a bit too extreme and probably completely unworkable if you do a range of activities.

I totally get your idea but for me, I'd need more than 2 of each, in case the washing machine breaks or whatever!

Report
Womaningreen · 16/09/2018 10:08

PS I work out so need gym clothes

Also don't drive so need couple of different coats according to weather type

but in terms of every day, yes, I totally get you.

I never go to weddings etc. If I did I would have to borrow something appropriate.

I have one pair of leggings and 2 exercise tops... plus a sports bra, but all that is kept with my underwear not part of my actual wardrobe.

SEems a bit spartan to me.

I would think you could do with

A light cardigan
A warmer cardigan
Long length jumper
Heavy, warm jumper
Spring weight jumper

That way the dresses would work all year round to give you options.

I think having different washes of jeans would mix it up a bit too.

What shape jeans do you go for?

Also I would double up on tops so you don’t have a panic if you stain them or you rip one.

Report
AnythingButMagnolia · 16/09/2018 10:23

Yes it is Spartan- but that's the whole idea.

If I rip or stain I can replace.

If I feel I am really lacking something say after day I could consider adding....but therein lies disaster (in principle!)

I wear gap girlfriend style.

I understand that is the idea but this seems extreme and joyless.

Up to you obviously but what is the motivator?

Report
Womaningreen · 16/09/2018 10:27

it seems fine to me with the caveat of cash

I frequently get it in my head to remove things from my tiny flat, but the reality is if I need them later, I will regret it because I will have to buy it again.

so if you have space to keep some of the stuff you have, I would keep it - that way there is something to wear when the washing machine packs up altogether.

I totally get the "uniform" thing and the spartan thing and long for the day I can chuck smarter work clothes (though the worn out stuff will probably be cut for cleaning cloths etc).

but I have made the mistake of getting rid of something and then finding I need it later so just a word of caution really.

I have considered this lately.

I never wear some of my dresses as I feel gross in them so need to chuck them.

I think I just need a few tops, 1 good skinny jeans, 1 leggings and 1 midi skirt.

PaulHollywood- the motivator is simplicity.

It's interesting because it doesn't feel joyless at all to me. If actually feels joyful, and as though I can focus on other more important areas of life. I don't think possessions necessarily bring joy.

I think temperature is a problem.

At the very least I'd want -
2 short sleeved t-shirts - black one and a black/white stripe or print one
2 long sleeved t-shirts - as above
2 vest tops - black and white
2 jumpers - black and grey
1 cardigan - black
1 short skirt - black
1 longer skirt - grey
2 jersey dresses - one sleeveless and one three quarter sleeves
2 pairs jeans
1 pair black trousers
1 pair denim shorts
