What boots to wear with dress

Hi. I'm going back to work soon after maternity leave and I feel like I've really let myself go. I've bought a new dress for work (knee length) and I'm trying to work out what footwear to put with it. I don't want to wear high heels and I have thick ankles, so flats that expose my ankles are also a no no. I have a pair of knee high black boots. Are these hopelessly unfashionable now? Should I be wearing those ankle length boots? Can I put them with tights? I'm sounding really inept, but I seem to have completely forgotten how to put an outfit together. Thanks.

A wee pair of black or tan leather Chelsea boots go great with knee length dresses

I did the same and bought a range of shoes but am finding my black wedge ankle boots are a firm favourite and get the most compliments
