Everything I own is scruffy, uncomfortable and doesn't fit. I am left with 2 leggings, 1jeans and 2 jumpers.
I am 40 and a bit fat. I have been favouring a leggings and tunic look for years. I look frumpy and scruffy and need new stuff.

Where do I start?

If you ever read blog posts about wardrobe essentials they always include some kind of t shirt which you’re going to need pretty sharpish if you’re in the UK! Mine are mostly from ASOS – I’m wearing one today. Black and white and navy are boring but useful.
If you wear leggings a lot maybe try some black jeans? These are a bit more versatile than leggings as can be worn under shorter and longer tops.
When I’m in a style rut rather than investing in expensive versions of things I normally try somewhere like Matalan and just go and try on all the different silhouettes – jeans, dresses, skirts, tops, trousers.

have you had your colours done, or do you know what colours suit you?

Going to weave myself a sack. And be a hermit. Then clothes won't matter.

I follow 40 something blogs on instagram . If you are looking for Breton tops then joules harbour tops are by far by favourite and sit well , not sticking to the squishy bits ! I also bought some crew t shirts the other day and they hang really well too!

I have done the same, moving house and boxed up 'clothes i dont wear often', left myself 5 things in wardrobe which I now see is all I wear and don't miss other items at all

Got some new nice bits in zara sale, some basic jumpers, lots of grey. Trinny from trinny and suzannah is on Instagram and gave me a boost

I live in leggings and over sized t shirts and work in an environment where scruffy needed as always getting mucky so often look like a sack of total s**t

I say go with basics, and try and dress them up.

I didn't say you had to buy anything - they just sell basics in pretty much every colour so it might help work out what suits. Or wallow in self-pity, whatever.

Wow OP that was rude. PNGirl gave good advice, that was a nice post. Enjoy your sack.

This.

Suggest you either stick to your sack or you go to a department store for a personal shopping session. Hopefully you won't be so bloody rude to the stylist......

I was actually in matalan when I wrote that. It was a comment on their stock rather than in the advice.
