Feet Help!!

This has probably been asked a million times but with summer approaching I'm panicking! What is the best way to get rid of hard skin (heels and big toes )? I'm too ashamed to go to a salon for a pedicure because they are truly awful so it needs to be something I can do at home. I have one of the Scholl battery operated foot file things but they get bits of flaky skin off and that's it!
