Any vintage-dress fans who can help with a petticoat question please?

I have a new swing dress which needs something underneath, a) to give it a BIT more fullness and b) as it is quite thin fabric and unlined.

I already have one vintage-style net petticoat (though no good for this dress as it is black), but have never actually worn it as I find it actually a bit TOO big - it makes my dresses stick out hugely and so stiffly that I wouldn't actually be able to get close to anyone, never mind dancing! So I usually end up doing without, but this new dress really does need something underneath.

So I wondered if there is anything available in between the usual 50s-style enormous ones (which is all I've found so far) and a basic slip - and where to find it if so?

I suppose another option might be to get one of the big ones but remove a layer or two of net - but that could end up going wrong and wasting money I guess, so I'm a bit nervous of trying it.

Any ideas? Thanks!!

I bought my petticoat from here because you can choose exactly what you want in terms of style and length and fit. The one I have is two layers, so it poofs out your skirt a little but its nothing major as I wouldn't wear something too 'big'. I also prefer a longer petticoat - you can roll it up but wearing it low on your hips never works!

That site looks fab lynnie, thanks! The single-layer ones they have might even be enough as it says they are stiff net, or else I can look at the customisable ones (though time might be a factor there as it says they take longer to make/send). Will have a think!

What make is the petticoat you have? I have a few all hell bunny ones. Although they are 3 layers so reasonably full they aren't stiff or make my dresses feel stiff. My friend has cheaper ones that are the same fullness but different material so are very stiff feeling and looking.
My ones are much softer can be worn under full circle or smaller dresses and move nicely.

Look up 'under skirt' on ebay.
They have quite a few there.

You need to shop here. They're cotton so are comfy to wear, look beautiful, and I love them under a full skirt in winter as added warmth too. I have the classic and the vintage, but much prefer the latter.

Mine is from Little Wings Factory, it has a fabric top and then 2 layers of net but quite wide and frilly.

Mimi that site has some lovely ones, they are a bit pricey for me though especially the vintage ones!

Well I thought about it some more and realised there is not much point to my black petticoat if it does not get used, and have now taken the scissors to the bottom layer of net Grin I never realised before quite how wide the layers are! So not surprised it is too big. Once the DCs are in bed I'll give it another try with my dresses and see if it looks better now. If so, I could get a similar one the right colour and do the same, as they are not too expensive and I do like that they have an opaque layer underneath the net, which some of the others don't seem to.
