what do old, fat, slightly hippyish women wear in the summer?

I haven't a clue.

Almost 40. Windswept. Size 20. Boring. Quite poor.

I have done the bkack t-shirt and linen trouser look for the last 10 years. I am bored with it.

Please help me.

Of course we may never get any summer and I could stay in my winter tunic, legging, cardi combo. But I suspect I am too old and fat for that look anyway.

Wear whatever you are comfortable with. If you like the linen trousers and top look rock it! I do, and I am just turned 3bastard9 too.

Maxi dresses? It can be a challenge to find one that suits, but once you do you won't want to get out of it!

Or why don't you try a bright top with linen trousers/shorts. Can always accessorise with a light summer scarf.

this is nice

Dresses all have no sleeves or cap dleeves. Neither of which are a good look on a hefty arm.

Any what length?

I don't do accessories. Or bright. Wouldn't know where to start.

What sort of top with a billowy long skirt?

I like this

I agree there's a lot of sleeveless stuff out there. I get by it by wearing a light jacket or cardigan.

this is a depressing title.

and seriously, 39 is old?
I certainly don't feel old at 39. It's a mind set, and you need to try challenging that before worrying about clothes!

But yes, cardigans are great with sleeveless dresses - do you have a style preference? I like the sound of knee length dress with full skirt and more fitted bodice (with cardi!) and nice flats.

What about some of the things on this site?

Something like this goes with a lot of styles, covers your arms and isn't too hot.

Best thing to do is get an honest friend or family member and drag them out shopping for the day. Try on lots of different styles, even stuff you wouldn't normally wear. Don't get down hearted if something doesn't suit, just try again in the next shop.

39 isn't old and I'm sure you're not boring, it's just your low self esteem telling you that.

lady I am a big shrug fan too :) I miss dresses with sleeves come the summer, we don't all want our pits out

I'm a lot teeny bit older than you, and plan to get one or two of those long jersey skirts and wear them with a vest top and then (crucially) a very thin cotton shirt which is almost see through. So it will still feel cool but cover up all my flab the little extra weight I'm carrying. Would that work for you?

Also, how about the linen trousers but with some loose cotton shirts rather than t-shirts? Add a long necklace ... very chic.

I hear you op (think your nickname is one of the best on Mnsent btw Grin)

I'm a decade older than you, size 18, big norks, bulging in all the wrong places. I tried on 4 pairs of linen trousers yesterday, and they all had ugly, square pockets sewn in to the front, just where I don't need the bulk.

So I'm sticking to usual jeans, fine polo shirts (I need a collar) ...and praying for rain ....

Sad

Sorry - this is not a very encouraging post is it Grin

Friends have recommended East to me but have so far been a bit wary ...

Looks as though it could be a bit ageing

There are jersey maxi skirts in Matalan, black, grey and stripey, £14. Very flattering.
