Small Mulberry Effie Satchel - should I?

permaquandry · 19/12/2012 20:11

It's £395. I'm wondering if I should as:

a) I want a classic style and not sure if the large embossed mulberry tree will date

b) a few whispers suggest that Mulberry are no longer as well made as they used to be

c) 395 is a lorra money and is it vulgar to spend that much in a bag?

The effie range is apparently going to be discontinued so now is the time to buy if you like it. Having said that its very likely to be in the sale which I believe starts on Christmas Eve. I don't think it will date, it's a lassie style.

I think it's lovely, one of the best.

I recently purchased the mulberry bryn shiny grain in oak. It's going straight back. If I wanted sub standard I would go to an outlet and pay 30% less.

Lovely bag but I would be put off by the size of the logo. What about one of these, chloe or this one?

I think the logo is discreet compared to the big metal badges on some mulberries. There's a list up on the purse forum at the moment of about four mulberry styles that are being discontinued.

Meant to comment on Q3 - I don't think it's vulgar to spend that on a bag - it's a classic and you will use it for years.

This is vulgar!

Sign up to the mulberry mailing list and they'll let you know when the sale goes live on Christmas Eve (also worth trying throughout the day - email normally comes a while after).

Quality is going down, and customer services are apparently not as obliging as they used to be (any problems I've had have been sorted out above and beyond my expectations though).

I love the Effie range. Other option if it's being discontinued would be to try and pick one up in the outlets after the sale has finished.

I don't like the blingy logo personally and I think if you aren't too fussed about buying it at full price then maybe wait and consider the sale. You might get one but then again you might not.

For that kind of money you need top be sure.

I have mentioned it here before (with past name changesd too) but Chic and seek sell designer 'pre loved' bags. They have some mulberry bags last time I checked and a gorgeous Balenciaga last time I checked too. It may be worth having a look.

I think they have a Mulberry cross body bag for around the £350 mark which I think is lovely.

Even though I bought a bag in summer from a Mulberry outlet in Summer which I love I have to say that the bags they have produced of late don't call to me and the prices really put me off and I am not even talking the full prices either!

I bought an Araline OP around 5 years ago and it was half price in the sale and was discontinued.

I bought a Mulberry Lily last summer from the NAP sale and it's substandard quality as well (the strap broke after a few wears). I'm actually wondering whether Mulberry knockoffs are better made these days than real Mulberries. Confused

I can get a better leather bag from any department store for half the price. I'm not sure what the hype is all about - I don't get it. So if you really like the bag, go for it, but to me even a discounted Mulberry is not worth its price. The label has lost its quality-control. I have a lot of great bags and I never wear my Mulberry - I get much more wear from either a humble and cheap Zatchel (excellent quality for the price - and rain-proof!) or my vintage satchel (eBay for pennies - has a lovely patina and gets better and better with time) or my Diors and 2.55.

IMO Mulberry has an awkward spot in the market - their bags are not cool like Celines, Chloes or Balenciagas. Nor are they really luxurious and classic.

How confusing - I have a Mulberry Essie, but isn't that one, is the one pictured on this thread, but I have chocolate (is maybe 6 or 7 years old)

They look nothing like each other - what happened, did they run out of names?!
I don't think it's vulgar to spend that much money on a bag, but if you're after a classic, I don't think that's it. Can you get to a factory shop to have a browse, feel the quality/weight etc.

Dons if its under a year old send the Lilly back for free repair to Mulberry

Glossy I'm in the process of doing it, but hate the faff of it.

Worse yet, unless they have redesigned the chain, it will snap up again the next time I pick it up - it is very fragile in many places. (Have not been energetic enough to investigate whether I could just return the bag and get my money back as I'm very unhappy with it.)

If you enjoy dealing with customer service and UPS men, buy a Mulberry. Wink

Dona take it to a mulberry outlet/store and they will send it back for free. That's what I did. I would investiagate if you can get your money back or exchange for another bag or accessories

My bags were out of guarantee and the problems were not with quality but due to my lack of care.

The repair cost was quite reasonable too!
