Can you successfully do red lowlights on dark hair at home?

I'm after a change in my hair colour and fancy some flashes of red lowlights through my dark hair. Had this done last winter but paid ££ at the hairdressers and not possible at the moment.

Anyone know if I can do this at home and how?
