if dress code for men is "jacket & tie" what should I wear

Going to day time drinks thing at a quite smart venue and dress code on the invite is "jacket and tie" in which case what should I be wearing? I would quite like to wear trousers with smartish top- will that be too casual? and if not, can anyone recommend a nice smartish top for me to buy!
