Using Glycolic Acid during pregnancy

Hello everyone,

Has anyone continued to use glycolic acid during pregnancy? I was using it for open pores, black heads, spots etc once a month pre pregnancy, but now prg my skin seems to have got even worse with spots.

I've done lots of reading and it seems gloycolic is one of the safer acids to use on the skin during preg as it isn't absorbed into the blood in the same way, but I'm still concerned. I'd of course rather have bad skin for 9 months than do my unborn baby any harm.

Any natural remedies for these probs also gratefully received!

Thanks

They might be safe to the baby (it's a natural product -sugar cane) but just bear in mind your skin changes dramatically during pregnancy from those lovely hormones.

Just my opinion but as a trained beauty therapist I never do these sorts of treatments on pregnant women from the sensitivity issue alone. Most women have no complications, but some women have discoloration because of their skin's sensitivity level. This discoloration in moderate cases lasts a couple of days and in worst cases is a lifelong affliction.

Personally I just would not risk it!

Thanks Holly. Can you recommend anything else, similar perhaps, to help close pores and reduce spots etc, which is suitable in pregnancy? Getting very fed up of my skin!

P.S. tried honey today, seemed to look cleaner afterwards...

I'm a big fan of Dermalogica but quite a few of these products aren't recommended during pregnancy for the issues you want to resolve as they contain either high levels of Vitamin A, some salicylic acid or lactic acid.

However, the treatment of the odd breakout with Concealing Spot Treatment and Special Clearing Booster is deemed to be fine as it isn't left on the skin for any length of time.

If you could find a Dermalogica stockist/salon near you, they can do a facial mapping consultation for you (sounds fancy - just looks at what your skin type is and what key problems you want to focus on resolving) and recommend products, they will also be able to give you some samples to try before you commit to buying anything (products aren't the cheapest but last for a long time as you don't need loads).

Don't be massively suprised if some therapists just will not recommend anything for you (in your pregnant state) in this age of litigation people really err on the side of caution!
