Has anyone taken up a martial art as an adult? What would you recommend?

I took up Kick boxing when I was 36. I'm 54 now and only gave up recently when my club disbanded.
Absolutely loved it. I made a friend there who started at the same time as me and we became close friends. In fact we are going to the pictures in about 2 hours time!!

I took up Kickboxing 6 months ago. Im 35 and have never done any form of martial arts before....im absolutely loving it.

My fitness is improving along with my confidence as im not the best at speaking with people i dont kow. Everyone is so welcoming but this obviously is down to finding the right club for you.

My DH started Karate earlier this year, he is 54. He really enjoys it and has no qualms about being an old beginner.

Not me but my DH took up karate in his mid-20s. Had a bit of knee trouble so had to pack it in for a while. Started again in his late 40s and got his black belt just before turning 50.

It's the best thing he's ever done. Karate has given him a whole new group of friends, a focus outside of home and work and a shared interest with DS who has also taken it up.

He also coaches now so it's given him another string to his bow and because of this experience of working with children he's considering a possible career change to pastoral care in schools. There are a few parents at his dojo who have gone from watching their kids to taking part themselves.
