just a note/reminder to ask the optometrist about checking for under-accomodation next time your child has an eye test.
The vast majority of children with DS (over 80% apparently) could do with having bifocals - look at this research
- but it is very rarely tested for unless you ask.
I'd heard about this at a DSA conference I attended last year, and this morning dd2 was finally tested for it - she has absolutely whopping under-accomodation and there's no way she'd be able to read normal-sized print without bifocals apparently - this was only picked up because I asked about it - she has been wearing glasses for 2 years now and has obviously had plenty of normal eye tests, which don't pick this up.
Just think how much this will have affected previous generations of children who never learnt to read as a result.
So please, spread the word and mention this to your optometrist next time you're there.
