5 yr old Ds can’t follow close moving object with eyes – asd

If asked to follow, say my finger, with his eyes, Ds tries and loses track almost immediately. 3 yr old nt sister can do it easily. Anyone had experience of this and whether it is related to poor concentration. And, whether anything can be done to improve the skill?
Thanks

Sonia Sumar's book, Yoga for special needs child had some eye movement related exercises in it as far as I remember (been a while!) but you should prioritise full opthalmics referral - hospital not just optician - so anything obvious can be checked out first.

Try to watch how he looks at other things close and far eg screens or up at an aeroplane, ants on the pavement etc any eye twitches or possible discomfort like headaches or prolonged squinting in sunlight etc. Expect regular follow ups to keep track of any changes too.

I found it helpful to take favourite toys/books to opthalmics appointments to give the consultant a head start communicating with dc.

Thanks Vipermisnomer. He finds finding things really hard, so I'm guessing scanning skills are affected.

I'd see your go and get a referral to hospital. My son (almost five) has a squint and is long sighted and had trouble following things close to him before he had his glasses. We only knew about his longsightedness as his squint appeared.
