DS 3 referred to camhs

Preschool asked me to speak to my gp about DS's behaviour and the autism word has been batted about. I've now got an acknowledge letter from camhs just saying they have passed his referral to their colleagues in paediatrics.

I feel so overwhelmed at the moment dealing with DS's usual behaviour and thinking about what's going to happen next and waiting is making me worse!

What do camhs do? Are they the best people to see?

Sorry to hear you are having a stressful time. Camhs look after children's mental health, their provisions and efficiency varies greatly between counties ( they do not tend to have a very good reputation on this board for efficiency I.e long waiting list!). Often children are referred to a community paediatrician or educational psychologist who can diagnose autism. Hope your wait is not too long, you can read on the subject while you wait and put strategies in place already. It can not hurt even if your DS does not need a diagnosis.
