How long for tax credits and carers after DLA award?

When we received the DLA claim letter, I called tax credits and notified them. How long does it take for them to update claim and change payments?

I also applied (online) for carers allowance. How long does that normally take? I'm always wary of doing things online in case they didn't receive it for some reason. How long do I wait?

And am I right that they should both be backdated to the date of the DLA award?

I did that today, updated the TC's by phone - they told me if I hadn't heard in 6 weeks, to ring them back on 01912 251441.

HTH.

TC's should be backdated to the start of the DLA award.

Don't know anything about Carer's Allowance, as I'm on IS as he's under 5yo, and CA is less than IS so I'm waiting till he's 5 to cross that bridge!!

You can get carers and IS...

Carer's is means tested, though. You can only earn approx under £105 /week then it's completely removed.

Thanks Couthy.

I am on IS currently but my youngest turns 5 in a few weeks and the JC advised me that carers would mean I could stay on IS so I didn't have as much pressure to look for a job (which would sooo not work right now!) Is that right?

couthy, I think dinky is right. you can get CA and IS. the calcululation is not as straight forward as CA + IS but it should leave you still much better off than not claiming CA.

kinky, you also need to inform tax credits people once you get carer's as CA counts as income for the tax credit calculations. ;-)

Thanks choc yeah I remember that too. So I have to wait for CA to be awarded, then phone TC and they'll adjust it again? Gah.

At any point do I have to tell anyone because I claim IS and know that'll be less when I'm receipt of Carers? Or will that be automatically sorted with the Carers claim?

The best bet would be to try this

benefits calculator

It should give you the most accurate idea for your circumstances

Yeah have done that thanks Dinkys and have a rough idea of what we will be entitled to, just unsure as to whether I have to tell the various departments about each other, or if it's automatic!?
