So Confused

Have posted once or twice about this under a different name .
My Ds (4) had his first appointment with the Pediatric Mental Health specialist today as I suspect he has something along the lines of Aspergers , I went armed with a list of all his quirks & his behaviour etc this list was 8 pages front & back (A5 pages) , So I didn't forget anything & the Doctor must of asked 2 questions at the most & left me to explain my concerns & worries.
He went & got another Doctor for a second opinion & now my Ds has been referred to this new doctor as they say he was referred to the wrong department & has been given an appointment for next week.
I just don't have a clue what this other Doctor Specialises in & obviously they pucked up on something else otherwise he would not of been referred elsewhere .
Now I'm concerned as I honestly don't have a clue what is going on or what to expect next week

Did they not explain which department you were referred to? It works differently in different areas. In my area, you get referred to a developmental paediatrician at the hospital. In other areas, they get referred to CAMHS.

What did doctor 2 say?

If you had been referred to the wrong dept (mental health instead of developmental paeds? I am guessing though) then I suspect next week (with developmental paeds) you can expect more of the same: ie an opportunity to outline your concerns. Take your pages of notes back with you.

You will be probably be quizzed a lot more about the history of your son's development including milestones such as crawling, walking, talking, sleeping, toilet training, early language skills, joint attention skills (pointing, motivation to share interests or be shown things), sensory issues etc. so I might try and think about those early milestones in preparation, consult your red book if they are documented in there, or to see the results of HV developmental checks etc.

It's a shame you were sent to the wrong dept but absolutely brilliant that they have got you an appt at the right place so soon. It is not uncommon to wait months.

Good luck for next week I hope it goes well (let us know).

Tbh, it seems normal to be sent round in circles when children are being assessed.

We were seen by 3 different paediatricians who all referred Dd3 on and eventually to CAMHS who despite agreeing that ASD isnot a mental health issue they did eventually diagnose her Confused

Dont worry to much, just dont let anyone discharge you until you are satisfied with the outcome because if they discharge you, you have to start all over again.

Good luck Smile
