DD (32 months with Down syndrome) received a draft statement on Friday. As part of her assessment process she was assessed as having a development age ranging between 16 - 24 months.

Her draft statement states that she needs a series of programmes to:

  1. develop her fine & gross motor skills
  2. develop her self care skills
  3. develop her speech & language
  4. develop her early learning & play skills
  5. develop her social interaction skills

    This should include:

  6. modelling use of language & introduce signing within general learning environment
  7. clear objectives, which are well recorded & reviewed regularly
  8. advice on her hearing levels should be sought regularly from appropriate professionals

For the most part I agree with the above, but I'm frustrated that there appears to be no provision for 1-1 care, despite several professionals stating a need for it. When I spoke to parent partnership they thought that could be because DD needs were so complex, that the LEA didn't want to limit the amount of time allocated, but I'm not convinced.

I'm going to request this again as part of the parental feedback form, but does anyone have any advice or comments on this draft statement please? This is the first time we've been through this process, so I have no idea whether the above is good or if I should be asking for more?

    TIA

Is it that bad? I don't suppose you can point me in the direction of somewhere with examples of what a good statement looks like? Thanks

wot Leonie said. Don't take it personally though. It's how everyone's statements are written the first time. Shits.

Ask yourself what in the statement the school couldn't do without a statement.

What will happen next is you'll complain there is no 1:1, they will then put 'up to x hours as appropriate of 1:1' and expect you to be happy which will still mean nothing.

By coincidence, I have just come on to post the same thing. Have just received my son's proposed statement. Similarly vague support recommended. On the plus side, I had half expected a Note In Lieu so not all bad!

Good luck with getting the amendments you want/need.

You really really have to get them to tighten up the wording, what help will be given, when and by whom?

Which professionals will be involved within school, when, how often, how will they keep in touch with you.

Do not accept anything which says that 'she should' or she 'would benefit from' as they are not legally enforceable should you feel that whatever it is is not being provided. My son's statement has been like this before, and the school he moved to just disregarded everything because, as they said, it's just a suggestion! This AR will be a very interesting one!
