Visit to shrink - progress on diagnosis

Went to see DSs private psychiatrist today for a second visit. Took lots of letters as evidence and he assessed DS again. His conclusion was that DS has lots of aspergers traits (but not enough for a diagnosis) and anxiety. He didnt read my letters but has taken copies of them away to study and wants to see DS again.

At least we finally have a professional who can diagnose DS who will document seeing autistic traits. He felt that the traits were significant enough to be disabling.

Now DS is three the psych was much more open to autism and didnt question our parenting.

Feels like a relief, even if we didnt get a diagnosis, we got some backup that its not just us going mad. (even if I have seemed it over the last few weeks!)

Thanks, after all the doctors and social workers recently its nice to have a professional confirm what we think. Even if a diagnosis eludes us we have some agreement!

It is important for your own sanity that a professional recognised what you have observed yourself ....... sometimes it can feel that we are possibly going mad when people assure you "ah but he just a boy - kids do that kinda thing" when we know that it goes beyond the level of 'normal' kids behaviour.

Remember Dx is just a signpost on the journey to assure yourself you are heading in the right direction. Good luck on your journey and start trawling the internet for ideas - The whole autistic spectrum is huge and you will have a lightbulb moment when you find where he finally fits in. Unfortunately as you know your DS the best it is for you to take the idea to the professionals for them to agree or disagree as in "do you think it maybe .... as it ticks most of the boxes?"

I feel so so so much better today. I know I still have a lot of work ahead of me but I feel a massive sense of relief, I feel like I can have a few days off from fighting. feeling much more positive.

My paed said 'ASD traits' in the first visit, and then ASD in the second (6 months later)

I got the feeling that they like to see them twice, 6 months apart, before they make a dx........
