occupational therapists?

Hello, does any of you ever wonder what (on earth) occupational therapists do?

My OT for my little boy got us lots of things for our home (rails, steps etc) and also aids for his pencil grip etc. We had a couple of sessions of assessment (one in the hospital and one at home) and then got the equipment they thought we needed. Not sure if thats how they all work, but ours was amazing help

My dd2 see's OT (took ages to get her an appointment) and dd1 is on the waiting list. We are going for our 4th visit on monday, most of the work they are doing with dd2 is sensory and excersize to build up her low muscle tone, we have tried out verious equipment which is great as you can try before you go out and buy something that may be useless.

Complete and utter waste of time. Makes me v angry when I think about how bleeding useless my DDs OT has been. And now I've been informed that despite having a Statement giving 3 (yes 3 whole) hours of OT per year, the OT is recommending at the Statement Review that this is changed to access to OT run clinics up to twice per year. Complete and utter waste of space.

mess- so sorry your OT sounds awful , i guess its a post code lottery, some OT's refuse to see some children (mainly on the autistic spectrum), we were refused with both dd's (only just managed to get dd1 on the waiting list and she's 7.5). Our OT has been great though and has even been out to see dd2 at school and offer advice to staff. We get an hour-an hour and a half each time we go, and we are going every 3-4 weeks so it sounds like we are very lucky.

My dd2s OT has been the frigging bollocks! Given us stuff to help her sleep, weighted stuff to calm her, identified that she has visual perception difficulties as well as sensory integration difficulties, hand writes pages and pages of notes for me after each appointment. I could literally kiss the woman's arse! Top of Xmas card list she is

Hmmm. Must be doing something wrong I think! I presumed it was the OT service in my area rather than the actual OT herself - who is a very pleasant lady BTW - but sounds like OT services can be good. I shall now investigate further.....

Our OT helps ds to play in different positions and is helping to extend that ability through improving his targeting (how well he sees and reaches out and grabs) and manipulation skills. She's also working on getting him to listen to and follow instructions and encouraging him to explore toys. She's excellent, but private / statemented.

Ha Ha mess you must have the same OT as us. She is very nice so nice and promises so much, tells us every single thing that dd has wrong with her what help she needs and then you here no more from her until you phone heer again and again.
She was suppossed to get dd some play sessions to help spacial awarness over a year ago.
Three weeks ago said she will refer us for buggy phoned this week and she still had paper work on desk to fill in
