referral to CAMHS for psychological assessment

Hi, my ds has just been referred to CAMHS for a psychological assessment by his OT. She has done a sensory assessment herself which show he has a high level difficulty with definite differences in sensory processing (which she is trying to help with) but also extreme behaviour which appears to be obsessive compulsive in nature (this why she is referring him).

What should I expect from CAMHS? I've only ever dealt with paeds, OT, SALT and psych ed before, but never CAMHS.

Is OC linked in with ASD? And more importantly, will they be able to offer me advice on how to handle his behaviours?

TIA

After initial assessment and potentially diagnosis they may offer medication and/or therapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy. They may also offer parenting courses aimed at behaviours linked with asd or adhd also possibly family therapy.

However waiting lists often very long, and continuity of care can be unreliable. In our son's case it took over a year to appoint a permanent concultant and meanwhile he saw a different locum each time plus took 11 months to begin any therapy and his was a "priority" case. However may be better in your area.

Thanks for the bump tc, and thanks for the reply pinkorkid :)

I like the sound of parenting courses/family therapy, in fact anything in the way of support or advice on how to handle his behaviours.

I've not heard much positive stuff about CAMHS but here's hoping that my local one is good.
