Hi everyone,

Just posted this in Secondary Education, and wanted to add to SEN chat also...

DD currently in Year5, diagnosed with dyslexia and prone to get anxious, so I am looking for a suitable independent girl’s day senior school for Year 7 entrance.

I am flexible on location and willing to move for the right school, somewhere along M25 corridor (Not looking for London schools).

At the moment, thinking/considering (not in any particular order):

  • Queenswood
  • Abbot’s Hill
  • Pipers Corner
  • St. George’s (Ascot)
  • Queen Anne’s (Caversham)
  • Manor House (Bookham)
  • Prior’s Field (Godalming)

I would really appreciate your experience/feedback on SEN and pastoral provision in these schools.
Any particular school you found particularly great for a dyslexic DD?

Many thanks

The only one of those I've come across is St George's. It's certainly quite small and nurturing with small classes, and for what it's worth Princess Beatrice, who is dyslexic, seems to have been educated there successfully. I don't really know what they are like currently and, for all these schools, you really need to talk to them about their experience of SEN and dyslexia in particular, including whether they have staff with specialist qualifications in teaching and supporting children with dyslexia etc.

If you're prepared to look at Greater London, it might be worth considering St Catherine's and Radnor House in Twickenham. Also LVS Ascot.

Hi Soleme,
I know Queenswood quite well, it used to be fantastic for dyslexia but the excellent Head of Learning support retired a few years ago, and from what I've heard the school is going in a less supportive direction e.g. focusing more on Oxbridge than helping those with reading difficulties.

Hi WithintheRealmsofFantasy
I appreciate your comment, it is really useful to know. I’m looking forward to an open day soon, and hopefully I can get a bit more understanding.
Queenswood seems to have only 2 people on their SEN team, although they did say that all teachers get regular training and are responsible for delivering differentiated learning in the classroom.
