Hi

Xposted in Higher Education.

My son will need a laptop or iPad for senior school.

Can anyone give any advice please?

Main considerations:

  • very slow writer and dyslexic
  • will use for essays for English/History
  • help for note taking in lessons
  • particular worry about keeping organised notes in science /social subjects. Science lessons seem to have a lot of copying down.

Not too worried about cost for right device.

Older siblings have Macbooks which have been great for essay writing but not so good for keeping up with class notes/taking photos of teachers’ notes on board.

Any help would be great! Thanks. :-)

DD had an iPad Pro for years 7-9 which meant she could also photo handouts and annotate them, take photos of the board etc.
She had a stylus and a keyboard (which was also part of the case) and she used mind maps. This was lighter than lugging a laptop around with her and it also made her far more organised (she also has an iPhone which meant she could access everything no matter where she is - so no excuses). She had a laptop at home but she hardly used it.

In years 10-11 she exclusively used a laptop at school however she continued using her iPad at home (watching tv, music, reading books etc so it kind of became a portable entertainment system 😁) I think the switch to a laptop was in part so that she would be used to using one for GCSE exams? She also continued using the iPad for her Art GCSE.

.....I appreciate that this is probably a rather expensive solution but it worked for her so money well spent. She did well at GCSES too.
