Year 7 and Processing issues

Hi. I'm new here and hope someone can help. DD is in year 7 at a prep school, studying for common entrance at the end of year 8. The head teacher has the view that she has processing issues and that explains her underperformance in exams v classwork. She is young for the year (August), and the comment was "you can always keep her back a year if necessary". This has come out of the blue as before we've been told it's lack of focus, immaturity etc "don't worry she'll wake up and realise that she has to start working". I'm really upset and don't really know what it means to have processing issues.

Can anyone help?

Has any assessment been suggested - an Educational Psychologist would be the obvious referral. ds has dyspraxia which affects his motor processing, planning and working memory but did really well in CE. For example if asked to write an essay he might have trouble planning and writing down what he wanted to say, would n't insitnctively know where to start drawing a diagram so that it fitted on the page properly, found it hard to remember instructions and struggled with mental maths and learning vocabulary. EP could suggest strategies to help overcome some of the organisational and concentration issues your dd experiences and help her achieve her potential.

Hi
If you're local to North West London you might want to consider coming to a Learning and Development Exhibition on January 29th, 2012.

An event to showcase local businesses and services relating to Education, learning and development of children and adults. Including, Special Needs Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Audiologist, Behavioural Optometrist, Counsellors, Multi-sensory Tuition, Confidence Building Workshops, Dance school for Special Needs, Paediatric Nutritionist and many more.

You'll be able to speak to a whole range of professionals for an opinion on your child's difficulties.

Thank you LIZS and busymum2008 for your answers. I will try and find a good EdPsych to go start with.
