Sleep

Lullabies

DS is just 3. Recently he's been asking us to sing to him at bedtime which is sweet but the only lullaby I know is one my Grandma used to sing to me as a child and I only remember half the words (Go to Sleep my baby, close your pretty eyes...)

Can anyone suggest some simple lullabies? I'm quite tone deaf but he doesn't seem to mind

Of course!

Any more? 1 doesn't seem to be enough...

Mocking Bird? Find it on Youtube etc. if you want to check words/tune.

"Don't Leave Nobody But The Baby" - from O Brother Where Art Thou - slightly morbid lyrics (but a lot of traditional lullabies are like that)
eg Rock-a-bye-baby, on the tree top etc...

mocking bird is my favourite, rock-a-bye baby also good (as IC said it's morbid though!)

I like Golden Slumbers:

Golden slumbers kiss your eyes
Smiles await you when you rise
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Care is heavy, therefore sleep
While I o'er you watch will keep
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby

I wonder if I can find the tune online somewhere....

'All the pretty little horses' It's a nice sombre slow one, in a minor key

Hush a bye
Don't you cry
Go to sleep my pretty baby
When you wake
You will find
All the pretty little horese

Blacks and Bays
Dapples and Greys
All the pretty little horses.

Am sure there must be youtube clips with the melody if you don't know it, but worked for dd!

Some lovely suggestions. I should have remembered Rock-a-bye baby!! (Strange how your mind goes blank when you're on the spot doesn't it!) We have a giraffe who's neck you pull yo play that tune - a very gruesome toy of you think about it too hard!.

Loving the sound of Golden Slumbers. Will see if I can find a tune...

I found the pretty little horses one on BabyCenter -I think they have a podcast you sou can hear the melody here

We just sing all sorts of nursery rhymes, just more slowly. Tommy thumb where are you? has a soothing tune when you sing it slowly, so does 12345 once I caught a fish alive.

Ally Bally (a scottish one) worked for DS for ages, as did row row your boat (quite hypnotic when sung over and over) and then finally the grand old duke of york, very fast! odd boy...

I think we've ruined the calming affect of row, row, row your boat by adding the "if you see a lion" line. DS likes to roar - loudly!
