Sleep

9 week old sleeping query

Hiya
I have a 9 week old DD who sleeps from 11 -7.30ish at night, I feed her at 10.45 and she doesnt want to feed again until around 7.30 in the morning. I know that this is fantastic for a baby so young she is FF due to major problems after her birth,

Anyway my query was that in a lot of books and magazines it says that you should aim to have your baby asleep form 7ish in the evening until morning. I think she would do this as she will sleep from 8 onwards and I wake her up at 10.45 for a feed most nights (although sometimes she wants to play downstairs for a bit which is fine as well) but how would a baby sleep for 12 hours without a feed? would you just fit the required amount of bottles in during the day???

I suspose my query is that she currently has roughly 5 bottles of 5oz a day. would I just need to change the feed times to let her sleep through from 8 onwards or should I be waking her for that feed a 10.45?

any advice much appreciated xx

9 weeks is quite early to be sleeping 12 hours without a feed but having said that there are babies that do. Why not try increasing the daytime bottles to 6oz each (and maybe a 7oz before bed). At this age I wouldn't push your LO to sleep through but if you increase her bottles you may find she is taking less at 10.45 and then doesn't need it. Alternatively you could just stop waking her for the dream feed and see what happens.

My DS (mainly BF) has only just started sleeping 11/12 hours at 7mo and he has 4 milk feeds a day (breast + 1 formula) plus 3 solid meals.

Hi

Both mine have been FF and DS is 20 weeks.

He has 4-5 9oz bottles during the day (he packs it in and doesn't need any at night). The last one at 6.45pm in his bedroom after a warm bath and is then put straight down. I found that when I stopped waking him at 10ish for a feed, he started sleeping till 6-7am.

Obviously when he wakes in the morning, he's very hungry ans then after that bottle I try to evenly space out 2 more feeds and don't feed him after 4.15pm, then I know he'll take his last bottle IYSWIM. If he really needs a bottle after this, I "top him up" before bed with some readymade.

It works for me, but tbh, its trial and error. Try not waking her and see what happens. IME, 9 weeks is quite young and you should just follow her lead. DS was about 12-13 weeks when it all began to fall into place.

HTH

Whether you're breast of formula feeding, the advice is still to feed on demand. It's a really bad idea to try and get your baby to eat more than they desire to and can lead to teaching your baby to be over-full and hence over-weight as an adult. If your wee child is happy, growing and sleeping well on 5x 5oz then leave well alone. She will go through a growth spurt soon enough (maybe as soon as in a week) and want to eat more/more often. 5x 5oz is 25 oz a day and IIRC, the recommended amount around 4-6 months (is 32 oz so she's really not far off that for one so little.
