Sleep

15 week old waking 30 mins after going down for nap

DS is nearly 15 weeks and settles himself really well when he goes down for the morning nap, but wakes almost on cue 30 mins later. He then seems happy for a while, has a feed, but then quickly gets really grouchy and obviously is still tired. He then goes down again about half an hour later. I've heard that babies come into a very light sleep after about 30-40 mins after going down and that they can't manage to get back off and so wake fully. I'm just wondering if anyone has some wise words about how to deal with this? Any advice gratefully received.

DD is the same age and is exactly the same! No advice but I'll be watching this thread with interest.

There's another thread about this at the moment. Lots of them do it. Both mine did/do. Very frustrating but normal and imo easier just to accept than battle with it. It does get better as they get older. DD, 2.3, has a long post lunch nap now and started doing that at about 1.

My ds does it too (12 weeks). I've just bought a sling to help me deal with a grumpy tired baby or else I extend the nap by going out in the buggy. However I have a 2 year old dd as well so can't always go out at the drop of a hat. Hoping sling will help and not put him off his cot at night!

I used to have a similar problem with DS waking after 45 mins, and I used to go and sit in his room after he'd been asleep about 35 mins, and the moment he stirred I would begin to do my usual settling thing (shh/patting in my case, but whatever you do to settle them normally), so he never really came round. I could get anything from an extra 20-60 mins sleep out of him.

My dd used to do this lots, I found it happened when more when she was overtired (still does and she is 8 months old now). Maybe trying to put him down a little earlier? I found at that age my dd would be ready for her morning nap after only an hour and a half after getting up!

My DS often does this and cries out and although sometimes I have to go in and resettle him for up to 10 mins (shh-patting in the dark) other times he cries for 1/2 mins and resettles himself back to sleep.

Do you give him a couple of mins to do this?

thanks all for replies

hopefully-that's a good idea about going in when he's been asleep for a while and to try and settle him before he actually wakes.

floury- yes he gets tired around 1.5 hours after getting up and that's when i try to put him down, but it's over if i miss the cues!

choc-if i let him cry he would probably work himself up into full blown crying so usually i have to go to him, thanks anyway

Hi all, I used to have this problem. Well I still do sometimes, BUT it's gotten a lot better since I introduced white noise and made the room really dark. Worth a try?
