Only falls asleep on me ☹️

My wee boy used to be ace. He'd sleep for five or so hours at a time, have a feed then back to sleep. Around five months he started to wake up more often and take ages to get back to sleep. He's now nearly 7 months and it's getting worse! He's now in his own cot in his own room. He's started solids (very successfully) but still has his bedtime feed about 7pm. He falls asleep straight away but is waking up every few hours and refusing to sleep unless I'm cuddling him. I'm happy to have him sleep with me but I'm terrified he'll get suffocated or squashed or will fall out the bed. I just lie there listening to him sleep. If I try and put him in his cot he screams for me. Last night I tried leaving him but we both ended up so distressed I gave up after 3.5 hours (I checked on him regularly) and he instantly fell asleep on me for 4 hours. I'm exhausted and don't want to have to do that every night. Will it pass or should I try something new?!
