13 month old trying to kill me

Hi Mumsnetters,

This is probably a topic that has been discussed on here before but really after some advice, as I’m at my wits end.

My LO who is 13 months old has started waking for long periods at night, anywhere between 1-3 hours. This has happened since we went on holiday (why does sleep always go to pot when you’re on holiday?!) and then a tummy bug.
She wakes between 6-7am, has recently dropped to one nap (councidence?) which is normally middle of the day, she’s never been one to have particular set nap times. Sometimes two naps if she wakes super early or we have a dreadful night.
She’s breastfed, and is basically fully weaned.
So I still feed her till she’s sleepy, then boo her to sleep, so getting her to sleep normally consists of 20-30 minutes of bopping. My back is not loving life right now.
We start bedtime between 1830-1900, asleep between 1930-2000.
Her normal pattern last few nights is waking circa midnight, sometimes taking 30 minutes, last night 2.5 hours 😫🔫
We have done some sleep training, CC in the past, it does improve things but we never do it in the night as we don’t want to disturb her older brother who is 3, and I’ve always wimped our on doing it for naps, going back to bopping as I know these are so important for bedtimes.
I’m on the brink of either doing serious CC for a few days for all sleep, naps, middle of the night wakings etc, or paying a fortune to a sleep trainer to essential telling me the same thing (I think).

TIA mumsnetters.

x

Sounds obvious but could be teething? My son did this for a few weeks round the same age and yes I thought I was dying too. One Christmas eve was the worst..up for 3 hours! Eventually some canines sprouted and he stopped doing it gradually. Try pain killer and white noise? Also re the bopping could you try a rocking chair? Sit with them on your lap and rock back and forward frantically!? At least you'd be sitting down! It won't last, promise. My son is 2.3 and a fab sleeper now so there is light at the end of the tunnel!

DS (11mo) has gone through phases of this since he was about 5mo. Usually wakes around 1am and then not back to sleep until around 3am. I have always taken the 'let's ride it out approach' but that has been relatively easy for me because I've been on mat leave and have no other children. He does, usually, start sleeping again - no rhyme or reason as to why. You could shuffle around with naps or try CC but I expect it will sort itself out more than anything....good luck!

Thanks for your advice!
I’m pretty sure it is just one of those pesky sleep things, she’s been poorly, and holiday and she’ll get better. I’m about to start a run of shifts then away for the weekend so we can’t do CC for a while, will reassess and see if it’s calmed down. Fingers crossed.
I generally have a really low threshold for calpol and that goes in early doors.

I assume "bopping" is rocking her to sleep? For 20-30 minutes? You need to put her down and leave her to go to sleep herself. She won't know how to self settle back to sleep when she wakes during the night if you are rocking her to sleep every time?

What happens if you leave her? What kind of crying does she do?
My DD is 15 months and we do her bedtime routine, have a little cuddle and then pop her down. She full on cries for a couple of minutes and then starts laying down, sitting up, whining, laying down etc and eventually falls asleep - she doesn’t do it particularly quickly or quietly but she does go off and isn’t distressed. If she’s doing this kind of whiney crying is definitely start to leave her for longer. If it’s distressed
crying that’s much trickier and I do feel your pain. I think I’d still sleep train but in very gradual steps.

Sometimes I find my going back in to try and settle her actually exacerbated the situation and leaving her to her grumbles until she falls asleep herself is actually a calmer experience for both of us than me going in and out and patting and cuddling etc!

She gets really distressed 😔 but yes if we go in and out it does seem to make it worse.
Last night she was so much better though, normal feeding then rocking to sleep, up once and in and out in 15.
Does your DD wake at night? If so how do you settle her?
TIA! x

I know, I will get on with it.
Can I ask you advice when she wakes at night? I can’t leave her to cry I’m the middle of the night as I don’t want her to wake her brother.
Thanks

What happens if you give 2 naps again? 13months is early to drop to one
