Gentler types of sleep training as can't do controlled crying

My 10 month old son is unable to settle himself back to sleep without being fed or rocked. I know it's my own fault for doing it but I am now wanting to try and resolve it. He wakes up crying and the crying just gets louder and doesn't stop.
I tried the controlled crying for a day but it was awful and traumatic and I definitely couldn't continue it even if it works. My son actually went hoarse after crying for 45 mins despite me going in and out to reassure him. Please tell me there are other gentler methods of sleep training. He is a very strong willed baby and could probably cry up to 2 hours if I let him. I just want to be able to put him to be able to fall asleep on his own without screaming the house down.

The Baby Whisperer method is gentler and can work.

EASY acronym = Eat, Activity, Sleep, You-time. Not controlled crying but managed withdrawal and careful listening to learn what a cry sounds like that does not mean "pick me up and comfort me" but instead means "I just need to explain in a bit more detail how very tired I am before I can settle"

I’ve recently done the fading technique with (so far) lots of success. I pretty much did it my own way after reading about it and the gradual withdrawal method.
I used to feed or rock her to sleep and only put her into the cot when fully asleep and was then ending up with her awake and not settling back to sleep in the night for 1.5 hours a couple of times.
I started by feeding her and then holding her rather than rocking and keeping an eye on how long I was holding her for, after 2-3 days I halved the time I was holding her for after her feed then after another 2-3 days I halved the time again, then I started putting her into the cot straight after her feed and holding using both hands to hold her while shushing and saying gently it’s ok,shush etc. That stage took longer more like 5 days or so and now I can put her down, say goodnight and she’ll shift about a bit and fall asleep. I’ve been waiting outside the door ready to go back in if she cries but if she moans or shifts about I wait.
I’ve also done the same thing with her daytime naps as I was rocking her to sleep in the pram.
There’s been no leaving her to cry and she’s now sleeping through the night
