How much does your newborn sleep?

DD is 1 week old and seems to sleep ALL the time. She can be more fussy at night time but during the day she basically sleeps for 2-3 hours, feeds, gets a fresh nappy and then falls asleep again. She has plenty wet and dirty nappies and seems in great health but I can't remember DC1 sleeping this much even as a newborn.

Yes, this is what tiny newborn do.

You know those adorable baby photo shoots you can go on, where they place and position babies. The best age for these is about 3 days okd for exactly this reason - tiny newborn basically only feed and sleep.

Baby is likely to wake for a feed, nappy check, wind cuddle and then straight back to sleep. This is over 24 hours a day, with the possible exception of a bit of cluster feeding in the evening.

Awake time will stretch with age. Enjoy this previous time

Thanks FATE - DD1 was a rubbish sleeper so guess I'm just not used to it!! I worry that when she basically sleeps all day that she won't sleep at night - time will tell.

At this young age, she should sleep most of the day and also most of the night.

My 2 week old now has about 2 periods a day when she's alert for up to an hour.

That's music to my ears Fate - she is def more fussy at night and harder to settle but nothing compared to the constant feeding/rocking/pacing/screaming of DD1!

Well I bloody well jinxed that badly - she hasn't hardly slept a wink today and hasn't stopped feeding and fussing
