Sleep

9-10 week old only sleeps 30mins in pram

I know this may be a bit early but just checking for views/tips!

My son is 9.5 weeks old, I am incredibly lucky at the moment (apologies as this is not meant as any sort of stealth boast and things can quickly change!!) as after bath-bed routine from 1930 he will usually sleep through to 2-4am for a night feed, then back down generally well until early morning. He is okay in his cot at night and can be put down drowsy / shush-pat to sleep.

His day naps are good ranging between 45-1.5hr with the odd 2hr nap. However.... this is only when on me or husband. He's okay in the car seat when out and about.

I've tried to start gently moving his day naps to the pram in our lounge (he won't sleep in it out and about).

So far he can go down but will only sleep for 30mins so he's not getting into that full sleep cycle stage? I try shush-pat but he's usually just getting upset whilst visibly tired/cranky so will just take him out and then he'll sleep on me for his main 1-1.5hr nap.

I know he's too young for self settling but just looking for any pointers! Do I keep persevering with the pram day naps first for every nap?

The natural nap length for a baby out of the newborn stage is 30-45 minutes usually. You will be in a period of transition at the moment because sleep in the newborn stage (first 3-4 months) is very different to nature sleep. The early months are often very easy because sleep is passive at this time, as it was in the womb.

So short naps are normal and you don't necessarily need to battle against tgem because it is usual at this stage in development for naps to last 1 sleep cycle only.

I'm time and as baby grows, he will learn to link his sleep cycles without help. For now, he will need help to link one sleep cycle to the next and so extend naps. Being on you is helping him link one sleep cycle to the next, but he's not doing this himself, it is happening because you are holding him.

Many thanks Fate Smile so at this stage should I keep encouraging day naps in the pram but try and help him to link the next nap-sleep cycle with the ol' shush-pat?

A back and forth pram push will probably be more effective.
