Hi,
I have a 10 week old little girl. She was born 5 weeks early and the HV said to treat her developmental steps as a 5 week old. The last three days she has been so awake during the day and seems really happy sat in her bouncer with her toys but she's not sleeping really during the day. Nightimes she wakes for feeds every two-three hours and goes straight back down.
Should I be actively trying to get her to sleep during the day already? I.e. Two hours after waking and xm afternoon nap?
Feels too early but doesn't feel like she's had enough sleep last few days

Thank you!

She's formula fed on demand which seems to be every 2-3 hours if that helps

Yes, you need to actively help baby get to sleep. Awake time (between the end of 1 nap and the start of the next nap) in the daytime wants to be around an hour.

Babies don't usually just go to sleep when put down. They just get more and more sleep deprived and exhausted - which ensa up making getting to slerp harder so the cycle perpetuates.

Some well established ways to get baby to sleep:

  • full tummy and plenty of calories. Feeds every 2 hours is fine (this isn't "too early"). Wind after feeding and reoffer bottle to check if any more is wanted. Always have more formula in the bottle than baby will drink.

  • something to suck. If not breastfeeding then a dummy or feeding to sleep.

  • perpetual movement. Bouncy chair, pram, car journey, rocking in your arms, swaying in a sling

  • Secure feeling. Being close to you, feeling you, seeing you, being held. A swaddle can also recreate this secure feeling, in a hands-off way

Everything FATE said and these might be useful. The method of getting them to sleep is not important, it's about getting into a good sleep routine to avoid the dreaded overtiredness.
