Sleep

2 hour morning nap

My 4.5 month old always used to nap for 45 mins in the morning, 2 hours at lunch and 30 mins in the afternoon with usually 90 mins to 2hours between each one.

However he has started doing the 2 hour one in the morning now which is leaving him cranky in the afternoons. Today he got up at 7am, went down for a nap at 8:30am and is still sleeping now. Should I leave him to it or try waking him to encourage him back into his previous routine?

It sounds like baby is ready for 2-nap days. What's his night's sleep like?

Assuming he's sleeping just as well in the night, I'd probably try to stretch that morning awake time to 2 hours at least. So a 7am wake up making a 9am nap.

Then move the lunchtime nap later and skip the afternoon nap. A good approximation for 2-nap days would be 234:

  • 2 hours awake time from waking until morning nap
  • 3 hours awake time between morning and afternoon nap
  • 4 hours awake time between afternoon nap and bedtime.

That is assuming two 90 minute naps. It might be that 224 or 223 works better for you. If you get a 9-11am nap, I would probably expect the next nap to start around 1pm to 2pm.

Thank you, I will give that a go. Night sleep isn't great, he wakes every 2 hours, but does always go straight back down after a feed.

Today he has only just gone to sleep again after waking at 11. Far too long between naps but we have been out and he hasn't been cranky at all.
