My husband and I have shared a bed with DD pretty much since she was born, and up until now it has felt completely right for us. However cosleeping with a toddler is a bit more challenging than sleeping with a baby, and our bed feels like it's shrinking by the day! Also, DD is starting to show some signs of readiness; she no longer falls asleep while breastfeeding, and sometimes falls asleep holding a cuddly toy. Also breastfeeding is no longer a sure-fire way to resettle her so having her in our bed isn't as helpful in maximising sleep as it was in the past.

I've got a stretch of 10days off work coming up so am planning to do it as gently as possible over that period, but am still feeling really nervous/skeptical that it will actually work.....

Please get me into a positive frame of mind by regaling me with your successful stories of getting your babies/toddlers into their own room!

I did it at this age and it's been great! Grin Where is your DD going to be sleeping? My DD has gone straight into a full size single and this is what we did:

16/17 months - BF to sleep in her new bed at night and for her nap. I would co-sleep if she woke and BF back to sleep in her bed

17/18 months - BF to sleep in bed. If she woke between 10 and 5, DH would go in.l and cuddle back to sleep. Before 10 or after 5, I would go in and BF (kind of based this on Jay Gordon's night weaning). After a few nights, DH would go in for any wake up but then she stopped waking up!

21 months - DS was born so DH has been putting her to bed since. Started off cuddling her but now just tucks her in and leaves her to go off to sleep.

Good luck! I'm sure it will be fine. I never thought we'd have DD out of our bed but she loves her bed now and we did it with no tears. We've got DS in with us now though...

I would go to mattress on floor in your room first for her. Once she gets used to that, then can stay there or move into a different room on the mattress. Then add mattress to a bedframe once she's a bit bigger.

Thanks for the pep-talk tea! My plan is vaguely similar to what you did, although like art mentioned we will be going onto a mattress on the floor first, then trying her in her cot once she is used to being in her room. Her cot does change into a low toddler bed, and I've read cosleeping babies don't generally like cots, but I'd be worried about DD rolling out as she currently launches herself all over our bed in the night.....

We didn't think of a mattress on the floor when we moved DD! She's actually never fallen out or even climbed off her bed; she sits and waits for us when she wakes up. We do use a video monitor and foam bed guards though.

fourkids and pastaagain Grin genuinely considered just looking for a bigger bed! Couldn't bring myself to bite the bullet though with a stupidly expensive and completely unused cot in DDs also unused room. Before DD was born, I thought it was worth splashing out on a cot for her as she'd obviously get loads of use out of it Hmm

Ah that's interesting tea, we've got a video monitor so maybe I'll give it a go with the bed set up first and just put the rail back on if needed.

Oh yes 20 months he insisted he went to sleep in his own room!

Kind of wanted me and my boobs there too though so a mattress in the floor worked really well. For a while he came in at first wake, that time got longer (a few regressions along the way) and he started sleeping through around 2.5 though teeth caused some issues. I night weaned not long after which caused a regression actually so another time I'd thought I'd night wean first then move.
