Sleep

Toddler suddenly refusing to go to sleep

My DD is almost 2. She has been settling herself to sleep since about 7 months. She's always been an awkward napper, but a good sleeper at night. Until a few nights ago, I would do the bedtime routine, sing her a song, give one more cuddle, and she would turn over and be out like a light at 7 (yes, I know, I've been very lucky). This now seems to have changed. I have tried repeating the last bit of the routine, stroking her back, staying with her, and leaving her to it. Nothing seems to work even though she is visibly exhausted. Finally got her down after 90 mins tonight by lying down next to her in our bed. She's just about given up napping in the day (at home at least, she sleeps for an hour at nursery). Anyone been through a similar stage and got any advice? I'm expecting dc2 and could do with my evenings back.

Being over tired makes it more difficult to get to sleep. So droppibg her daytime nap could be the culprit here.

Completely agree FATE but she will not nap at the moment for love nor money. In face DH is up with her now trying to convince her to nap. And the napping thing had been going on for a while, but this night time thing is new.

Sounds like classic signs of the dreaded 2 year sleep regression! There's loads of advice on the internet on how to deal with it. Thankfully it's not permanent!

Thanks Strawberry that's really helpful. I had never heard of a two year regression. We've worked through the others so that gives me a lot of hope.
