Sleep

14 week squirming through night with wind?!

Can anyone advise? Dd is EBF and we co-sleep. She has never really slept more than 2 hours at a time in the night. Lately I've noticed that she's actually not hungry but very windy. If I massage her tummy sometimes a fart will come out and she will go back to sleep.

This is almost every hour or 90 minutes so I am really exhausted! I have tried Gaviscon also gripe water, colief and homoeopathic chamomile. Also I have made my own fennel and dillseed tea for her and tried to eliminate milk and spicy food from my diet but nothing is working. Now trying tummy massage through the day and at night. It is really disheartening as nothing seems to work and am really struggling!!

Please does anyone have any advice? It's pretty bad from between 3 to 7 in the morning

My wee one was the same at that age. Have you tried, with her lying on her back, taking her legs and doing a riding a bike motion with them? Then gently pulling them up to her head and shoulders. DS let out some terrific ones when I did that (every morning about 4am for about 3 weeks) then fell back to sleep immediately. Never found a way to stop needing to do it but bicycle legs got rid of the wind very quickly.

I know it doesn't help when you're in the moment, but remember that THIS PHASE WILL PASS and in a month or two it'll be a distant memory!

Have you tried having a smal peppermint tea? Nothing worked brilliantly but dd2 was windy and when I had a tea it seemed to help. Worth trying ginger too. The only downside of mint for bf I could find is that if you're worried about supply it can have an adverse effect but I didn't find that.

You're not eating a lot of greens are you? I've actually had to stop eating anything brassica while breastfeeding because it gives my 8mo horrendous wind.

Thanks for all your replies. I know it's a phase but just feeling so tearful atm as so tired. Just so tired it can't be possible.

I will try a peppermint tea. I'm not eating loads of greens - a lot of leaves and I cut out lentils and beans just in case. It's bloody awful as I'm veggie so not sure where I'm getting supposed to be getting protein from! But anyway...

It's nice to get some reassurance that I'm not the only one!

My baby is 10 weeks and has always been similar. She has never gone more than 1-2 hrs between waking a for the second half of the night. She's not so bad if we cosleep. I think that's because she feeds to sleep and doesn't have to get past the discomfort all by herself. I feel like I've tried everything! At the moment I'm sticking with feeding her to sleep all through the night but I know that's not very sustainable. It gives me enough energy to cope with the day though!
