Sleep

DS needs much more nap sleep in the morning - any ideas why?

Just curious really. DS is nearly 5mo and usually has four 30-minute naps a day, cannot persuade him to nap any longer and he pretty much sleeps through the night so canont complain really.

But he is rubbish in the mornings....needs a nap 90 mins after waking up, and then again 90 minutes after waking up after his first nap.

In the afternoon he seems happy to be awake for up to 2 and a half hours.

Anyone any idea why this is the case? It seems strange to me that he's more tired in the morning, when he's just had a full night's sleep!

That sounds normal to me, only being awake for 90 minutes but being able to go a bit longer later in the day. When my son was that age I think he was having his first nap only an hour after he'd woken up.

When he gets a bit older (6 months) he might start joining the two morning naps up and having a reasonable sleep then be awake for a longer stretch.

But I have no idea why babies are like this! It does seem odd when you think about it.

Agree normal. You tend to find that most babies naturally fall into a pattern of doing the shortest stint awake in the morning, do their longest nap after lunch followed by the longest stint awake in the afternoon. Its known as the 2,3,4 method eg

Up 7
Awake 2hrs
Nap 9-10
Awake 3hrs
Nap 1-3
Awake 4hrs
Bed 7
