What do I use to safely swaddle...

...a 3 month old??
We stopped swaddling at about 4 weeks and have persevered with a sleeping bag but sleep has just got worse and worse to waking hourly. Last couple of nights we have make-shift swaddled with a jersey sheet and managed to get a run of 5 hours!!! Amazing!!!
However as my little DS is waking he had shuffled about so much he had ended up with the sheet over his face.
The point of the swaddle with him is to prevent the startle reflex and general flapping around with arms and fussing with face so I do need to have arms restricted.
If the majority think its unsafe to swaddle at this age then I'll rethink.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

I've never used one but the grobag company make swaddling blankets. They are purpose built so will tuck in to prevent bits covering your baby's face.
Good luck!

It's generally safe until they start rolling - then you can use a grobag which gives them a similar feeling but leaves their arms free.

Jojomaman do swaddle pods or something like that that zip and Velcro sono coming undone if you can still swaddle... I also used very large muslin squares from eBay as they don't cause so much heat ... you have to be a bit careful re possibility of overheating.

Get a swaddlepod they are amazing, my DD is almost 12 weeks & now in a 3-12 month one, totally safe as zip all the way at front.

My 3 and a half month old is still swaddled at night as otherwise she wakes herself with her startle reflex. I have bought two 'woombies' from Amazon which have been brilliant. They do them in various sizes, for bigger babies as well as newborns, plus you can buy the convertible one which allows you to let out one or both of their arms out when you are ready to wean them off the swaddle.

we used a muslin cloth or a blanket DS1 was swaddled for ages ds2 fought against it really quickly and there was no going back. if those swaddle pod things had been around we would have had one

Another vote for the miracle blanket from Mothercare... We used up to five months because it was indeed the magic bullet!

Hi I have to swaddle my 4 month old other wise he never settles to sleep as he has his hands in his face constantly. I use a gro bag swaddle sheet and seems to work. Sometime she wriggles out and I have to wrap him back up.

We still swaddle - Dd is 5 months next week. We use a summer swaddle me microfibre wrap. She has been swaddled since birth. I have discussed it with both my Gp and the HV and both are happy that she is safe. Won't be much longer so we are now training her with a sleeping bag. Not holding out much hope Sad

I'd agree with 378.

We swaddled with DS but I've just been warned by midwife against it do started researching and it seems that SIDS peaks at 3 months and starting swaddling then is regarded as partciularly dangerous.

So I'd do a bit of research before going back to swaddling. It's your choice in the end.

I would be surprised actually if any baby over about 6 or 7 weeks would tolerate swaddling if they haven't done it for a while. My sister tried to start swaddling at 8 weeks and her baby would get really distressed.

Try not to worry too much passmethecrisps I really dreaded stopping the miracle blanket at 5months and goggled 'miracle blanket weaning' and all sorts. As it happened, DS still slept like a trooper without it! (Same with ditching the dummy at 2.5)

Ah kato thanks! On both counts.

Fantastic! I was just about to post a similar question :) DS also flaps and smacks himself in the face; but I'm worried about him being swaddled and getting too warm.

This only seems to be a big problem at night... He usually naps ok in the day (although sometimes only for half an hour) but during the day he is often in the carrycot part of his buggy so it's a bit more narrow in there, which I think he likes.

Off to amazon I go. Thank you ladies!
