I've now been awake since 3:30. I didn't get to sleep untill midnight (though I don't usually have problems falling to sleep)

i have to get up in a few mins and go to work, where I will be until 6 (unusally long day for me)

Same issue! No problem getting to sleep! But if I wake I can't get back. How long have you had this? I'm trying Paul McKenna's book!

I've always been an early waker, but recently, last six months, it's been terrible.

Don't know about Paul McKenna's book, please tell me more!

I am tired, so very very tired.

Insomnia is grim, you have my full sympathy. I have had it a few times, for months at a time. Paul McKenna's book is ok but I didn't find the CD particularly helpful. What worked for me:

  • no caffeine in the afternoon (never mind the evening!)

-Go to bed late - midnight is fine. Set your alarm for the same time every day, and actually get up then - don't linger in bed afetrwards, no matter what a crap night's sleep you've had.
-Eat well and exercise - get some fresh air daily if you can.
-Easier said then done I know but: don't get too worked up about it. When you are really exhausted, you WILL sleep - it is physically impossible to stay awake for more than a certain amount of time (without external stimulus). The bout of insomnia will NOT last forever, it's a phase.

Try an audio book. I have the Harry Potters and usually only last one or two chapters before zzzzzzz....

No caffeine in the afternoon? - OK... even tea?

An audio books is a great idea - will get a few from the library

I don't touch any caffine at all, all day! No drinks after 9pm so needing the loo doesn't wake me.

I have a sip of this before bed helps, and the Paul Mkenna CD (comes with the book).

All seems to be working! I now wake close to 7, and can get back to sleep even if I do wake up!
