Yes, I've never been very good at sleeping. I've got no good reason to be awake, my ddtwins are 13 now, I'm not ill, I was out at work yesterday and will be again later today...

I sometimes read myself to sleep, but you've got to be careful what book you take to bed, if it's too exciting you have to stay awake to find out what happens next[hsmile] So I take non-fiction - biography, popular science, history, that sort of thing. Usually bores me to sleep reasonably quickly, but I must absorb some of it as we always seem to win the pub quiz[hgrin]

I'm awake now because a friend came round, we opened a bottle of Wine, she only had one glass, but I had two, I went out like a light but have woken up thirsty, I SHOULD have gone straight back to bed when I'd had my glass of water but somehow MN called me...

If you're not back that means fingers crossed you're asleep. Which is where I'm going back to. Goodnight.

I had absolutely chronic insomnia for years, which became epically bad in the last month or so of pregnancy, and it turned out to be the best possible preparation for having a baby because I have a vast repertoire of coping strategies for sleep deprivation! Do give breast feeding a shot, if you're not already planning on it, because there's a miracle hormone it releases which absolutely knocks you out and makes you feel very refreshed after only a couple of hours sleep. I was adamant I was only going to BF for six months but I can see myself becoming an extended breast feeder just for the sleeping benefits! which I'm sure I'll reap once DS decides to sleep more himself...

I go through phases of waking at 2 or 3 am and being unable to get back to sleep at all - very annoying. Have you been taught any relaxation techniques? I focus on my breathing and try to think only about that, being aware of inhaling and exhaling ( sort of like meditating). Or i'll work my way up my body starting with consciously trying to relax my toes, then the arches of my feet etc. By the time I get to my shoulders I'm usually drifting off.

If all else fails, get cold. Getting up and being a bit chilly for twenty minutes and then getting back into a warm bed works wonders for me.
