If your baby had 4 month sleep regression, how long did it last?

Please tell me there is an end to this!! DS started early, more like 'just over 3 months sleep regression', and is still waking more or less every 2 hours in the night. This has been going on for about 6 weeks! Some nights are better than others and he does generally do 3/4 hours at first but after that it's every couple of hours, sometimes less, then usually up for the day at 7am. He hardly naps either, though again some days are better than others. He sprouted 2 teeth a couple of weeks ago and is still dribbly and chewing on his fingers but no sign of any more.

I read somewhere else on here that how they first fall asleep at night impacts on the rest of the night wakings. Well, I put him down sleepy but awake, hover for a bit then leave him to self settle and he does. But he doesn't do it in the night! ( actually a couple of times he has ) He feeds to sleep during the night, but not any other times. For naps he is either in the car, swing or bouncy chair or sometimes self settles in his carry cot.

Is there anything I can do?! Or does it normally last this long and I just have to be patient? My HV suggested gradually starting on baby rice at 20 weeks ( he's 19 weeks now ) but I can't see how that will help his sleep? DP seems set on how he is going to magically sleep through when he starts solids!

Give me hope please!!

Hate to say it but the whole screechyness lasted about 6 weeks Sad but it did improve quite quickly and her daytime sleep got much easier too. Hang on in there, it will be over soon x

6 weeks I'm afraid! It just sorted itself out, I didn't try baby rice or any kind of weaning until a few weeks after it passed.

I found co- sleeping helped, and Ewan the dream sheep helped the transition from our bed to his cot.

Hang in there... This too shall pass!

4 months ds2 started self settling all by himself and was waking every 3 hours ish, feeding and going straight back to sleep. Bliss.

About 4 months and 2 weeks he regressed.

He is 7 months and still hasn't settled down. Cannot be put down awake, if he doesn't feed to sleep at bedtime you are screwed even when he is really tired so he ends up downstairs with us til he finally drops off either on dh or feeding. You put him down he soon wakes again but you cna't get him settled again in his bed you end up bringing him down again etc etc etc. Then he spends the rest of the the night in our bed which will either be fairly settled til 5am when he gets handed to dh or he will spend the whole night trying desperately to sleep but not being able to work out how.

Solids has sod all to do with it so ignore your HV. Your baby doesn't sound too bad really, some self settling, sleeping between feeds. There is a lot in there that is positive so just hang tight and keep doing what you are doing and you will find he gradually starts going longer in his own time.

Oh gosh Indith that sounds tough! I know he could be worse, but was hoping he'd be improving a teeny bit by now! Saying that last night he slept from 8.15pm to 12.30am, then had a big feed, then slept from about 1.15am to 6am. Think he was a bit windy after this as he was wriggling and grunting for a bit before having another hour or so about 7am. Think this was probably a fluke ( also he had less than an hours worth of naps so was worn out! ) but we'll see how tonight goes. It's definitely been at least 6 weeks so about time....

It's only just getting better here now at 26 weeks, we have gone back to 2 or 3 wake ups rather than hourly.

Similar to KatAndKit - we are at 28 weeks and have just gone back to 2 wake ups. It started at 14 weeks here so that's 14 weeks of it [bleary eyed emoticon].

About 3 months of it here and it's still going on. We have had 2 nights during that time when she has only woken twice (although she also thought the day started at 5am) and we naively thought it might be coming to an end. No such luck.

This weekend was especially bad - waking every 45mins-1hr with teething. I don't think I've had more than a 3hr stretch of sleep since she was a couple of months old.

Oh noooo wish I'd never asked! Last night was another good one, 2 blocks of about 4 1/2hrs then 1 hour but I won't be getting my hopes up then.

I'm so sorry to say this but DD slept 12 hours EVERY single night since she was a few weeks old (with 1 dreamfeed in the middle, but never actually woke up).

Enter 4 month sleep regression (at around 3 1/2 months) and she started waking up multiple times during the night. She's almost 7 months and now wakes up almost every single sleep cycle Shock

I'm comforting myself thinking at least it will merge with the 9 month sleep regression and hopefully be over then.

Hope it gets better for you soon!

DD's four month sleep regression lasted 6-8 weeks. It was bad but not the worst case I've heard of.
She started sleeping through the whole night at 7 months without any sleep training. Coincided with the night we moved her to her own room. It was a sudden change so I found it difficult to sleep through the night as felt I was going to explode with milk!

BurnThisDiscoDown · 14/10/2012 22:48

For about 6-8 weeks he woke up every sleep cycle, then he randomly went right through from about 10 til 7 (woke up petrified and with rock hard boobs!). From then on the amount of bad nights gradually reduced. By 6-7 months hex was waking up twice a night for feeds, by 9 he was sleeping through (excluding teething, colds etc). Now I've typed this he'll be up 29 times tonight!

I have one just like you, Poppy! Slept through from 4 weeks, and then got to 3 1/2 months and boom! Tonight is particularly bad, he's currently screaming in DH's arms... (Despite only being asleep for two hours)But very infrequently he'll sleep through, just to give me false hope!

Hopefully it won't be like this for you, OP!

Just checking back in, after last weeks optimism we've gone backwards a bit again! He's now generally waking after 3 hours, though it was 2 hours just now. Just when I thought we were getting somewhere! Also not going straight back to sleep when put back in cot now either. I was hoping to get him into his own room soon as he's outgrowing the crib and making a right racket when he's thrashing about. But there's no point yet if I'm going to be backwards and forwards to him all night. Soooo tired.....

Feel your pain! My 21 w/o goes down at 8pm, self settles or occasionally with a dummy. Up at 11ish to feed and self settles straight after.
Then the fun begins. Although last night wasn't so bad, 'only' woke up at 330, 4, 440, 5, 510, 520, 540 and 620.
HV has also advised early weaning, but the thing is that he's not waking up hungry. If he was, he wouldn't go back to sleep as he screams the house down when he's hungry.
So, no advice, but if it's any consolation, you're not alone!

My goodness Merida that IS bad, I feel like I shouldn't really complain! I definitely think my DS is hungry, as he does tend to just wake, feed, then go back to sleep. If I try and leave him a bit he'll start crying 'properly' and doesn't stop if I pick him up, only when he's fed. He also feeds frequently through the day so think he's just a greedy boy!

AA.... Shhhhh, we do not want to know.....

Warning - depressing news alert.

4 month sleep regression started for us in January. Really bad until the end of August. (so just linked seamlessly with the 9 month regression).

At 12 months DS was sleeping okish (just a couple of wake ups). Now at 13 months he had a couple of wakeups plus a very early start (5.30am Sad )

Don"t want to depress you but to be honest I wish I'd known the the 4 month sleep regression would last longer than a couple of weeks. It would have helped me to accept the bad sleeping and not go crazy thinking about it.

DS was an excellent sleeper until the 4 month regression. I am still waiting for him to come out the other side. He will be two years old at the end of the month. Sad

Out of interest, do you feed every time they wake? DS was into a pattern of a 10pm dreamfeed plus waking around 2.30/3.00am for a feed but now at nearly 4 months he's up and down most of the night. I just feed him as the quickest way to get him back to sleep (and to avoid waking my DD), but should I try and settle him without a feed if it's only been an hour or two? Will it help him self settle? He goes down awake at bedtime so I know he can do it. I am dead on my feet here Sad

Lol, my DD slept through at 12 weeks.

That's why I got pregnant again so quickly.

DS is PAYBACK TIME for my babysleepingsmugness the first time round.

I deserve it.

Sad

Grin verity

I think I deserve a sleeping baby next time around. I've already told DH that these magical babies exist but he doesn't quite believe me Wink

TITC I BF almost every time DS wakes. Though usually less than 1 minute and he is gradually getting better and waking less. He's even gone through the night a couple of times so I know he is capable of doing it. I just can't face withholding BF and facing the crying.

On a good night DS wakes, cries, I BF him briefly, put him back in his cot so he falls asleep in his cot and I'm back in bed in less than 10 minutes. On a bad night I'm up for 2 hours rocks in corner

He only started dropping the night feeds from around 11 months though. It didn't cross my mind to try it before 7 months and then we had a really hot summer here so I didn't want to deprive him of a drink.

Have you tried co-sleeping? I was really against the idea but at 8 months gave in (too shattered) and so DS went to sleep in his cot but at some point in the night when I cracked I'd bring him in with me. Even if I didn't sleep much, I was lying down which surprisingly really helped.

Then at 11 months I found the energy to decide that he was staying in his cot all night every night and he has been for the last 2 months until 5.30am anyway

I wouldnt' have found that energy without the co-sleeping though.

Good luck!

I've got a job interview tomorrow, with a brain decimated by a four month sleep regression which has lasted for two months - 3-4 wakings per night on a 'good' night, 5-6 on a bad one, then up for the day at 4:30am and refuses to nap for longer than 30 mins at a time. Except when there's somebody visiting, when he'll sleep for 90 minutes while I have to be sociable.

I hope they don't expect me to use any big words tomorrow...like 'and' or 'that'. Coherent sentences may be required...oh dear...
