Problem sleeping in travel cot at night

My 11mth old can sleep in the travel cot in the day time but will not sleep in it at night. Does anyone have any suggestions? We thought we might try reading his story in it at night for a week & then put him in his normal cot after that but we dont have a clue what to do after that. Help - we are going away in a month!

Do you have a comfy mattress for it? The ones that come with travel cots are just diabolical. Put all the same stuff in it that you have in his normal cot.

Do not use a non travel cot mattress - my dad did this with brother and they found him wedged between mattress and side and blue. He was ok but only just. As a result of this mothercare updated their training program to reflect this recommendation.

Can you take the normal cot mattress with you and put him on that on the floor? May not be practical but know a few people who did this instead and it worked really well. We always took travel cot but our dd never slept well in it but it may have been new place/change to normal routine that caused this.

Zimm: Wow, never heard of that. I guess that could happen, but sounds very unlikely (I use a travel cot as DS's regular bed). How old was he? If DS got trapped he would yell. Obviously, the mattress needs to fit the cot (no gaps on sides, etc), and, if worried, you could get one on the thinner/lighter side to fling on top of the travel cot mattress. The mattresses that come with travel cots are as soft as a plank of wood - DS would never sleep on one.. :/

Toys - I think he was pretty small, I think any baby over a few months would yell. It is a pain that travel cot mattresses are so rubbish though.

Thanks everyone. I dont think the mattress is a problem as he sleeps in it fine during the day.

Agree with tele addict my be more an issue with being unsettled when he is away (assuming you are worried as going away)? Travelled a lot with dd and always did same routine as home as that helpe.

He hasn't slept in the travel cot away yet. We thought we would try him at home first (thought we were being smart!). Glad we have 3 weeks to sort this out at home first tho.
