Am heading to France with friends in Jan, they’re skiing, I’m just going. It’s already heavy snowfall there with more forecast. They already have the ski equipment but I’m not skiing. Friend is lending me a ski coat to keep warm but I’ve asked what else I need and been told nothing really bad hats and gloves. Will I need thermals? Thick socks? Complete newbie here. Thanks

Hat, thermal socks, gloves, waterproof boots/shoes (like timberlands)

It's effing freezing, especially if you're not actively moving.

You will have an amazing time, enjoy the hot chocolate with rum, crepes, fresh clean air! Enjoy the apres ski

Thank you, that’s very helpful. I’m aware my friend have all been loads so are prepared with the right clothes and I don’t want them to get annoyed with me when we get there and I’m freezing despite my having asked!

Go to Aldi and get one set of thermals. A decent warm and gloves also important. You will feel the cold more than skiers and jeans are just freezing, so look in tkmaxx for proper waterproof warm ski trousers. Someone might have a spare pair to lend you?

I would get some basic ski wear (trousers, socks, base layers and snow boots) from Decathlon; they’re very reasonable and you’re likely to get colder not skiing than if you were active on the slopes iyswim. And a decent pair of sunglasses as you won’t have a helmet and goggles

Sorry OP can I hijack? Newbie here and need recommendations on "decent" brands for thermals, gloves, hat- particularly for young teen.

Definitely snow boots or waterproof walking boots with grippy soles for walking around. You can get styles that look like normal boots (not moon boots) so you can wear them at home too.
