Has anyone else has a problem with Mumsnet and malware?

A couple of weeks ago, I clicked on a message within Talk and immediately more than 20 windows opened up, all advertising. My computer continued to open random advertising pages and and an audible announcement telling me my security was at risk also began. I ran a malware scan and my computer had been infected with trojan horses and other malware. It took ages to sort, but I didnt really connect it to Mumsnet itself at the time.

Last night, I clicked on another Talk thread and exactly the same thing happened (my computer managed to block 29 windows from opening at once!). A malware scan tells me I had 7 trojan horses and multiple other infections. Is there an issue?

Hi Follyfoot

That sounds pretty worrying. We'll get our Tech team to look at this straight away.

Can you please give us a few details - if you're using a PC or Mac, and also which browser.

Many thanks.

Not come across this but a genuine advert can be sabotarged due to insecurities in some browsers (and plugins like Flash).
Do remove any browser plugins/helpers you do not use and do keep all those you do use updated.

Hi Dawn. I use a PC with Windows 10 (its my lovely shiny new computer Sad )

Last time it happened I was using Chrome. As a precaution, I uninstalled Chrome and downloaded Firefox which I was using the second time it happened. Just thought it was a coincidence the first time, but the second time made me wonder. I have adblock so dont see any adverts. I've copied the list of malware that was found to a word document if that would be helpful?

It could of course be entirely coincidental, but thought it was worth asking if there was an issue.

Hi again Folly - yes, it would actually be very helpful if you could send us that list - just drop us a line at [email protected] and mark it for my attention - I'll make sure our Tech team get to see it.

We really hope we haven't broken your lovely new PC Sad
