Is there a way I can hide entire topics?

You can hide entire topics from active conversations - go into 'customise' and then scroll down to 'ignore topics in active conversations', click on the link which takes you to a page called 'Talk preferences - topics and threads'. From here you can also opt to hide and show specific threads from active conversations. Hope this helps.
