Can we start a thread where we give feedback on the improvements we would like to see to the site?

Maybe this has been done before, but I thought MNHQ might find it useful feedback, even if for complicated technical reasons or because the MN old timers would go mad, it's not possible.

Here goes:

  1. Proper buttons for bolding, italics etc instead of the DOS era keystrokes.

  1. When you scroll over a thread link, it shows you the first few lines of the first post

  1. The thread originator is shown on the list along with the latest poster.

Not bothered about the DOS-style bolding because it is compatible with all modes of posting, whether on a PC (where mousing is easy) or on a laptop (where mousing is inconvenient) or on a phone (where mousing is impossible and the screen too small for buttons).

I like ideas 2 and 3.

My suggestion is that the poster name field in advanced search could be predictive, or even intuitive, so that as you begin entering a name it presents all similar poster names. Some names are really difficult to enter accurately; they may be very long, or alphanumerically complex. Or you may not even remember the name accurately, but know only that you are looking for a poster whose name begins with 'pretty' or who has 'candles' in her name.

No, not bothered about any of those either, sorry Greythorne.

Don't use "Last 15 minutes", so not bothered about that. Can see how it'd be annoying though. Problem / reason is probably buried deep in the original code. Mind you, so was the 51 threads on THreads I'm On and that was sorted.

[snigger] would presumably need to animated. 'tis just one step from tickers, so, no.

TBH I'm contented with MN as it is ATM

See, I'd be totally against that. Makes things WAY too easy for stalkers and other nasty noses.

I'd like to be able to delete threads from threads I'm on

Hide threads in mobile

And people answer my threads Blush

That never occurred to me - guess I must be too nice! I have often vaguely remembered a conversation I had at some point with someone, and wanted to revisit it. Maybe just to re-read, but often to talk more. Or because I like the way someone talks/thinks, and want to read more by them. I search by poster name fairly often. Nothing Blush about it, any more than there would be following a good blog.

Oh, yes! Hiding / deleting from threads I'm on would be great.

  1. I see no reason why we can't have buttons above the reply box living alongside the hints section to the right, meaning people can edit whichever way they choose. So long as there isn't a great resurgence of hatred for the idea, it'd probably help those who are more used to the MS Word way of things.

  1. There are some technical hitches with this. Mainly it wouldn't be practical to have more than about 1 line of text in a tooltip, since having big boxes appear over every single thread link would be distracting (and a nightmare for older PCs). And the work required to get that single line for each thread is quite taxing, so I don't reckon it'd be worthwhile doing unless the idea gets a lot of popular support.

  1. This is easily done if people are happy with the change. It does mean you have to remember the first nick is the latest and second the author (or whatever), but hopefully it'll be clear? What do people think?

Appreciate the feedback from you guys as always. It's always nice to hear some ideas to improve the talk pages. Brew

I may be dangerously close to foot-in-mouth syndrome here, but the idea as I see it is that watched threads consists of all the threads you're interested in, and TIO is obviously all the threads you've posted on. If you're interested in a thread and have posted in it, then surely you'll also be watching it? Similarly if you're not interested in a thread you've posted on you can unwatch it (or even hide it). Do we need this level of customisability for TIO? On most forum programs the concepts of watched threads and threads posted in are basically the same thing anyway.

I'm not sure what's happening with the thread hiding, it seems to be working for me. Are you properly logged in, i.e. you get Log out/Inbox/etc. links at the top of the page? And do your hidden threads appear in the last hour/last day pages too?

Don't worry, I'm not ignoring you. Just trying to keep my forum posts from becoming full-blown essays. Too much of a good thing, or something like that. Wink

I often post on threads I'm interested in but that later descend into bunfights, become totally uninteresting or die a sudden death. I'd love to be able to hide / bump threads in TIO in the same way as in TIW.

IMO watched threads is more a long term reference thing.

A 'threads I've bookedmarked' bit would be grand, bookmarking is a great feature but I tend not to use it 'cause I then have to add them to my watch list which I'd rather not do. They're usually of short term interest.

Maryz problem with Last 15 minutes is one I'm sure I've seen mentioned may a time over the years. TBH I never use it so it doesn't bother me.

I hated MN new when it came in, but actually it's much better. I switched between new and classic for ages but new won out in the end.

Go on, try it for week. I bet you'll like it Wink

I like ideas 2 and 3 from the OP. I have been on forums that have had these features and they're really useful.

I'd like to be able to embed images, but I bet everybody else would hate it Grin

I'd like to be able to do embedded quotes like DamianTech

A poll facility would be fun and, if used in Mumsnet Campaigns, it could be a useful indicator of how much support there is for an idea.
