hello there , i would love some advice on the lawrence sheriff school in rugby. We are planning to support our boys to get into this school and would love any feedback from parents whose children go there. It seems like an excellent school although I have heard some unsavoury reports about racism/bullying .
I am also looking at ashlawn although this may be out of our catchment area
many thanks

Hi, I know this is an old post but we are planning to move to Rugby from London and aiming for good state schools or grammar schools (depending if they did get in). I am from a South Asian background and wanted to know if racism is an issue in Rugby, Warwickshire?

I visit Rugby from time to time. It has a collection of some of the best schools in the country.
Lawrence Sheriff is an excellent school and well thought of. There was some recent talk about some girls being unkind a couple of years back but it's been dealt with I'm told.
There's an Asian market/shop on Railway Terrace which is useful for many things.
We have a friend who still lives in Rugby and works in the City in London.

Hello, don't think there is racism within the rugby area specifically. I have some friends who have lived there for many years. There is a fair sized South Asian contingent.
The boys grammar school - exe education and teachers but there is definite bullying and some quite rude behaviour. Very disappointed about this - I know the shops opposite the school have had some trouble with the boys. I've been quite shocked to hear this as I expected a lot better.

I've heard mixed reports about the girls grammar, some really praising it and others not as much.

Had I know this, would I have sent my child to the school, unsure .... perhaps more hesitant . However, it may just be a reflection of children and schools these days .

Oh that does sound a little disappointing, thank you so much for sharing your experience. Will keep in mind while making the final decision :)

Hello. I am awake stressed as to what to do re my child's school in Rugby when he returns after the holidays. To say there is no racism is not true. As the population of different nationalities is increasing in Rugby, I am finding that school life for children who are brown or black is difficult but it is hushed up by the schools. Unfortunately a lot of families move here from Coventry to get away from the multicultural aspect of the city so my children have been called the N word. White children have targeted those who are different and are protected by the mainly white staff. When you mention racism, there is total denial. One black girl kept getting her hair touched by older boys and it was totally ignored by staff, except one teacher who was pushed out for reporting it. When the girl got so scared that she carried protection, she was expelled. There are more accepted ethnicities and you mention being Indian, it may be better for you. I must emphasise that our experiences are NOT with Lawrence Sheriff. Our family members were sent here to the UK from the colonies after world wars and unfortunately, despite being here for generations as we are brown, we are still treated as other. My brother and I are reaching retirement and wish we belonged to a country that actually accepted us or wish we did have a country to "go back to" as we are asked to do.

Morning Lou

I think you need to put your concerns in writing and address to the head and to the governors.

Has something specific happened or is there a list of things ?

Also seek advice from anti-bullying organisations and they may also be able to guide you.

so sorry you are experiencing this .
